Chronos in a nutshell
- Don't expect to defeat Chronos on the first try - this is a very difficult battle.
- During the battle with Chronos, all time-affecting effects won't work - these may be the tarot card slowing down time when Omega attacks are charged, Selene's Phase Shift Hex, and finally, entering the pause menu won't pause the game.
- During the first half of the first phase of the encounter, Chronos sticks to one-off attacks with breaks between them. During the second half of the first phase, the boss starts to chain his attacks, with up to 3 strikes per combination.
- Make sure to defeat lesser enemies summoned by the Titan to not get overwhelmed.
- Be careful and observe the attack animations without constantly throwing yourself at the boss.
- In the second phase of the fight, pay attention to what happens to the floor of the arena - Chronos now uses different moves with many of them launched at the same time, and has access to a few new attacks that can kill you with a single hit if you're not in a safe area.
Chronos' attacks (first phase)
- Scythe Slash - Chronos raises his scythe up with both hands and swings it wide in front of him. The blade leaves a black streak that remains in place after the attack has been performed. The streak explodes after a second, dealing damage again. To avoid the attack, perform a Dash to a safe area. If you are very close to the boss, Dash through Chronos to get behind his back.
- Scythe Charge - Chronos leans back, holding his scythe behind his back, then performs a charge directed at you. A black streak will appear where the charge has been performed, exploding after a second and dealing damage. To avoid the attack, do a well-timed jump to a side.
- Scythe Throw - Chronos raises his scythe up with one hand and throws it in front of him. The scythe flies in an arc towards you, trying to hit you from an unique angle, then returns to Chronos. This is probably the most dangerous attack of the boss, dealing a lot of damage with little time to react. To avoid it, you must Dash backward or forward at a perfect moment - watch the boss and be ready to dodge when he raises his weapon.
- Scythe Whirlwind - Chronos holds his scythe in front of him and starts to spin, creating a whirlwind that draws you closer to him. After about six seconds, the boss sends a narrow shockwave in your direction. If you see the attack being launched, sprint away from Chronos and to a side to avoid being drawn by the whirlwind, then wait for an opportunity to Dash to avoid the shockwave. Do not, under any circumstances, use Hexes or any abilities that keep you in one place, as Chronos will easily draw you closer and hit you with his spinning scythe.
- Sand Dome - Chronos raises his empty hand into the air and creates a golden circle on the ground around himself. After a moment, he teleports to a different location, leaving a sand dome in the radius of the golden circle that blocks your projectiles and immobilizes you if you touch it. To avoid this attack, jump away from Chronos when the spell is being cast.
- Golden Orbs - Chronos releases rings of golden orbs that spin around him. Stay away from the boss when that happens to not get hit by orbs. The orbs will create a barrier separating you from him, making you unable to approach the enemy.
- Banners - Chronos hits the ground with his scythe and summons four banners, which after some time provide him with a barrier that blocks your attacks. Destroy the banners as quickly as possible to prevent the fight for taking more time than needed.
- Reinforcements - Chronos surrounds himself with a shield that blocks damage and summons reinforcements - centaurs or satyrs. Get rid of them as soon as possible because they can overwhelm you very quickly.
Chronos' attacks (second phase)
In the second phase of the fight, the arena changes to a large clock face. Chronos retains his scythe moves such as swings, charges, throws, or whirlwinds. Additionally, he also receives many new and modified attacks:
- Time Implosion - Chronos raises his scythe with one hand and slowly starts to rotate it above him. When the attack is being charged, the arena will slowly turn dark, aside from one, safe, brighter area. After a few seconds, the arena will be covered by golden light - if you're not standing in the safe location, you'll die instantly or lose Death Defiance if you still have it. When you see this attack incoming, abandon any attempts to attack Chronos and immediately run to the safe area. The attack has two variants - the safe location may be one of the roman numerals or a ring around the center of the arena. Once you've made your way to a safe location, you can use the remaining seconds of the attack to attack Chronos from a distance.
- Golden Circles - Golden circles appear around the arena and reduce their radius until they are small. You must Dash through them - at the same time, be careful, because Chronos may use other attacks during this time.
- Sand Domes - Chronos creates multiple sand domes around the arena that block your projectiles and immobilize you if you touch them. To avoid them, steer clear of the golden circles that appear on the arena floor.
- Time Slowdown - the screen turns gray and your movement is slower. This attack may confuse you a bit, but it is not too dangerous and the boss uses it rarely.
- Golden orbs - three red rings appear on the arena floor. After a moment, in their place, there will be 3 spinning rings of golden orbs. Stand in spaces between the rings to avoid the projectiles.
- Clock Hands - several golden clock hands appear in the arena and explode after a few seconds. Immediately get away from the hands if they appear near you and stay that way until they explode.
- Golden Beams - a long, red laser beam appears in the arena. After a moment, it turns golden and starts spinning around the arena like a minute hand on a clock face. When Chronos has less than half of his health, two beams will appear, the second of which will behave like an hour hand. Try to stay away from the lasers or Dash through them if they get too close.
- Reinforcements - when Chronos loses around half of his health, he teleports to the center of the arena and surrounds himself with an indestructible barrier. He starts summoning hostile hourglasses at roman numerals in the arena and creates a ring of gold orbs around him that prevent you from getting close. The indestructible barrier then disappears. Get rid of the hourglasses as soon as possible, as they block you from using safe locations for when Time Slowdown attack ensues. Be careful, because if you destroy a hourglass, a sand dome will appear in its place.
How to defeat Chronos?
Prepare yourself for a long and demanding battle. The battle against Chronos consists of two phases, and the boss himself has two separate health bars. The first phase takes place in the House of Hades, while the second one on a large clock face. The Titan of Time has a lot of health and his attacks deal serious damage - you're most likely to have to repeat the fight a few times to successfully win it.
Chronos begins the fight accompanied by a few satyrs. Try to lure them away from the Titan and get rid of them there, preferably with your Cast - if they live too long, they will start summoning Vermin, making the arena a bullet hell that is impossible to overcome. Do the same whenever the Titan summons more enemies or banners appear.
One of the biggest challenges in this fight is that Chronos controls the flow of time, nullifying all your time-affecting abilities, such as time being slowed down when Omega attacks are charged, Selene's time-slowing Hex, or even the inability to pause the game in the middle of the fight. If your combat tactics involve Omega attacks, you'll have to learn how to use them without the slowdown - charge the attacks only after Chronos stops attacks of his own.
In both phases, when Chronos has more than half of his health, his basic attacks with the scythe will be performed one at a time. When his health drops below half, the attacks will be performed in combinations of up to 3 strikes. The most common combinations are two slashes, two slashes and a charge, charge and two slashes, three charges. React and mitigate the boss's attacks, attack only when the boss ends his combinations, and don't be too aggressive - get away after a few inflicted attacks so the Titan doesn't punish you. Also, attack from different angles than the boss used - his slashes and charges leave black streaks that explode after a short while.
Be especially ready to counter the scythe throw. The attack is launched very fast, the blade travels quick and covers a lot of area, and Chronos can throw the scythe differently based on the current distance between you. As soon as you see Chronos lifting his scythe with one hand, prepare to quickly Dash forward or backward.
The second phase of the fight may turn out to be somewhat easier than the first. Chronos has new attacks in his repertoire, but their launching animations are quite long, allowing you to avoid them easily. Since the animations are long, if you avoid the attacks quickly, you will have a moment to attack the boss. Always watch out for the Time Slowdown animation - this attack can kill you with a single hit if you're not in a safe area. More attacks also mean that Chronos will use his faster moves less often. However, he tends to use many attacks at once, forcing you to pay attention to not only the arena but also the boss.
The fight with Chronos is the ultimate test of everything you've learned - the boss requires divided attention, constant movement around the map, crowd control, and avoiding multiple attacks at once. One of the unique Boons of Hades, which you can encounter in Tartarus on the way to the Titan King, may also be of great help to you. His Boons were designed with this fight in mind - for example, they can give you invisibility and invulnerability after being hit, heal you, or automatically take away 20% of Chronos's health at the very beginning of the fight.
Don't worry too much about failing to win initially - the fight with Chronos is long and very difficult. With each subsequent attempt, however, you should be more comfortable with his attacks and gain experience. Once you have defeated the Titan of Time, your quest will end in victory.
