As you expand your kingdom in Norland, you must be prepared for a situation in which the reigning king will have to step down from the throne in favor of someone else. This page will give you tips on how to develop your house and secure its future.

The ruling monarch of every kingdom in Norland will eventually have to get ready to give up power. There are several options for transferring the crown, but each of them requires the presence of the rightful heir. On this page, we explain how to take care of your family so that it can constantly expand with new members.

Passing the crown

A heir is a designated person who takes power after the king's death. The status of such a person is indicated by the silver crown on the hero's head and the title "Successor" among the personality traits in the "Skills" tab .

You can freely transfer the title of heir to another member of your noble family. However, this action has serious consequences. A lord who has lost the right to inherit will start to hold a deep-seated resentment towards the current ruler and the new heir, directly impacting his family relationships.

The crown can still be passed on during the king's lifetime. What is very important in the context of foreign policy - the appointment of a new king "resets" diplomatic relations with other kingdoms and the church. Relations between countries are a direct reflection of the likes and dislikes of individual rulers, so if your king has made many powerful enemies, handing the crown to someone else may be a good way to "reset" relations with your neighbors.

To transfer power or the right to succession, use the "Action" button in the target person's window, and then choose the relevant option from the "King" tab.

How to get married?

The easiest way to expand the family and ensure continuity of rule is to get married and have a child. If your ruler is single, then under the right circumstances, you can arrange a relationship with someone from neighboring provinces.

The heart symbol above the family house on the world map symbolizes the presence of a potential wife. By clicking the "Assign" button in the main settlement window and then selecting the "Bride to be married off" option you can see which noblewoman is currently looking for a husband. Before deciding to get married, thoroughly examine the statistics of your chosen partner to determine conclusively whether this person will be useful in your court. When you decide to marry, choose a lord who will marry the woman. Of course, a potential spouse doesn't have to be a king, he can simply be an "ordinary" lord. After making the choice, the husband will go on a journey to meet his future wife in her ancestral home, from where they will then return together to your settlement. The new family member will now join your house, appear among the other lords at the top of the game screen, and you will be able to give her commands just like any other lord.

When you take your wife into your home, you must pay a bride price. The price can be seen in the table by hovering over the heart on the world map, and it is directly linked to the woman's statistics and her family status.

Getting married also has a positive impact on relations between kingdoms. Relations between the rulers immediately improve, which opens the way to further strengthening relations between countries. A strategic political marriage is a valuable tool for conducting foreign policy.

The matter becomes a bit more complicated when you decide to marry the woman-lord. If you accept the offer of such a marriage, you will be compensated financially, but you should be prepared for the loss of a family member who will move to her husband's kingdom. However, you will still be able to enjoy improved diplomatic relations. So if there are a lot of unmarried women in your kingdom (e.g. the monarch has many daughters), marrying them off may be a clever way to build political connections.

How to have a child?

The remedy for aging lords is to produce another generation of rulers who will take over the leadership after the death of their parents.

A married pair of lords will consistently attempt to have a child, regardless of the success of their relationship. A pregnant noblewoman will lose the ability to move at the end of her pregnancy (usually lasting several days), and then she will give birth to the youngest member of your family.

Noble children will appear next to a bar showing all your lords. The baby is born with all skills at level 0. To develop it, press the plus button in the little lord's window, then select the "Educate" option, the scope of knowledge transferred, and the teacher. The teacher's statistics, both related to the subject being taught and the "Teaching" factor itself, influence the quality of the knowledge being conveyed. A high level of learning provides bonus experience points after each lesson (the appropriate number of experience points in a given skill will increase its level).

It's also worth adding that children and teenagers up to 21 years of age receive twice the experience during a single lesson. This means that when raising a future king or lord, it's worth giving them as much knowledge as possible from an early age.

Children may inherit character traits and talents from their parents:

1. More traits will emerge during the process of growing up, in addition to those inherited from parents. To increase the likelihood of developing the most positive ones, ensure your child's high level of happiness and devote a lot of attention to his or her education.
2. Talents are special predispositions related to a specific skill. They are marked with an asterisk in the character's statistics table. A talent provides a bonus when learning and training a given skill.

Noble children cannot perform certain activities. Until the age of six, they cannot do anything specific except acquiring knowledge. A six-year-old child can start copying books in the library, but he or she will be able to do more only after reaching adulthood.

Freelance lords

If you are concerned about the future of your house, one of your emergency options may be to befriend a freelance lord. These are people who, for some reason, left their settlements and now wander around the world. They usually come with the Holy Caravan.

When such a person visits your city, you can hire him for 10 days, during which he will join your group of lords, offering his services. This is an excellent way to temporarily arrange for extra help, as the hired lord can take on the same tasks as the members of the local noble family.

However, you can try to make friends with the monarch and the freelance lord staying in your residence, which will allow you to keep him/her with you permanently. If the freelance lord's relationship with your ruler is at least 25, you can grant this lord a title, officially including them as a member of the family.

What is the maximum number of lords?

The number of "slots" in a noble family in the Norland universe is strictly regulated by the church of the Loving Family. In practice, this means that your family cannot have more than 5 members.

This feature will be particularly important when you reach the limit and one of your children comes of age. If the title isn't relinquished for this person by then, he will leave the family estate and set out into the world as a freelance lord.

You can create space by marrying women off to other kingdoms or simply removing someone's title. This option can be found in the "King" tab in the interaction menu. Remember, however, that a nobleman stripped of his status will begin to harbor a grudge against your ruler, which may even result in deliberately sowing discord among your neighbors.
