Guards play an important role in Norland as a service that ensures public order. On this page we will give you tips on how to recruit them and then get them out on the streets.

Guards in Norland are special units recruited from warriors who patrol the city streets and protect the kingdom's citizens from attacks by criminals and wild beasts. On this page, we explain the process of recruiting warriors, organizing guards, and appointing patrols.

How to recruit warriors?

Before you start organizing the city guard, you must have a group of warriors under your command. To do this, click on the "Army" tab visible at the bottom of the game screen (fifth from the left). A window for managing troops and warriors will open.

The upper part of the window shows your lords, who can lead the army. However, we are interested in the section visible below and described as "Warriors." At the beginning of the game, it will be empty, waiting to be filled with new recruits.

To recruit new warriors, click on the gray portrait with a plus sign on the left. A new table will open from which you will be able to recruit soldiers. You can obtain them from several sources:

1. Prisoners - this option involves enlisting prisoners held in your kingdom into your army. This is worth considering, especially in the case of prisoners of war, who most likely already have some combat experience. Conscripting a prisoner into the army automatically grants him freedom, which dramatically improves his well-being. You can read more about managing prisoners on the What to do with prisoners? page.
2. Peasants - the second option for acquiring warriors is to recruit someone from the peasant class. The prospect of death on the battlefield isn't very encouraging for the average citizen, and this will manifest itself in a huge drop in mood immediately after being drafted. Moreover, a new recruit needs to undergo training, which will force you to build a new type of building (Training Ground).
3. Mercenaries - the last option involves hiring professional warriors. They don't need training, and after hiring them, they will come to your city.

Where to place the warriors?

Warriors don't share housing with civilians, but live in barracks. You will be able to build this building from the very start of the game, and you will find it in the building menu, in the "Army" tab. The barracks can accommodate 10 warriors.

How to organize a guard patrol?

Once you have incorporated some warriors into your army and placed them in your barracks, you can start organizing patrols. To do this, go to the building menu (first tab from the left on the bottom bar), and then click on the "Army" tab. Here you will find two structures described as "Night patrol" and "Day patrol."

Using these posts, you can designate the area to be protected by city guards. The area extends in a circular form around the structure, and covering the selected area will require placing several, or even a dozen, banners at appropriate distances. They cost nothing to install. However, try to place them primarily in crucial places exposed to danger, such as:

1. Prison ward;
2. Lords' residences and villagers' housing;
3. Farmlands and workplaces;
4. Forest clearing areas.

Once you have placed the patrol posts, random warriors from the barracks will go on patrol at an appropriate hour. Remember that only warriors in reserve (those listed at the bottom of the “Army” tab) who aren't currently serving in any unit can be delegated to this task.

Warriors don't like patrolling the streets, which negatively affects their fatigue and mood. When organizing patrols, remember to carefully monitor the well-being of your warriors.

What do the guards do?

Guards deal with a number of important things, but their most important duties include:

1. Supervising and guarding prisoners so that they don't escape from the prison ward (at night) or the workplace (during the day);
2. Protecting the civilians from assaults by vagabonds;
3. Protection of lords and inhabitants from cutthroats;
4. Theft prevention;
5. Protection of people working in the wilderness (e.g. in the forest) against attacks by wild animals.
