Nishio Tetsuya was born June 23, 1968 in Aichi, Japan. He is an animator belonging currently to Production I.G, known as one of its most prominent creators, being often called one of the "Three Gods of IG".
Nishio graduated from Nagoya Designer Gakuin College and joined Anime Spot as animator. He started his career as an in-betweener for the slapstick TV series Osomatsu-kun. After working there for a few years, he managed to establish himself as a highly regarded animator with his work on Studio Pierrot anime, his involvement with Ninkuu marking a highlight of his career. He left Anime Spot after Ninkuu in 1996 and became freelance before eventually joining Production I.G.
Nishio holds Utsunomiya Satoru in high regard and was particularly being influenced by Gosenzosama Banbanzai! and The Hakkenden: Shin Shou. He is an action animator and does not intend to become director. The highlight of his early period is the unforgettable animation of the marionette in Ninkuu #41, which he animated using a real marionette for reference. In general he had a tendency to cram more animation into his episodes than any of the others, eventually hitting a count of 9000 cels for Ninkuu #50 (3000 being the norm).
A first turning point was his stint as animation director of Jin-Rou, to the animation of which he brought a level of scrupulous attention to detail never seen before in an anime film in order to ensure that realism was maintained at every moment. An action recorder was used assiduously throughout the movie to verify the accuracy of key animation, but none of the animation was rotoscoped, and in fact most of the animation is at a rate of 3 frames/cel.
Today he is known as one of the "Three Gods of IG" along with Kise Kazuchika and Okiura Hiroyuki.
He was rewarded the Best Character Design Award at the 8th Tokyo Anime Awards in 2009 for his outstanding work on Sky Crawlers, where he designed the characters and was key animation supervisor.
