The planet known to the Federation as Signi Beta and known to the Klingons as QuI' Tu was located in the orbit of the binary star system K'mach and K'Tuj in the space of the Klingon Empire in the galaxy's Alpha or Beta Quadrants.
History and specifics[]
In approximately the 14th century, the Narr genetically altered the plant life on Signi Beta.
In the late 23rd century, Signi Beta was a disputed planet between the Federation and the Klingons. To settle the conflict peacefully, a test was set up in 2263, in which two agricultural colonies, one Federation and one Klingon, would work the planet to see who could manage it in the best fashion. Dr. Vivian Rathbone was the assistant chief agronomist for the Federation colony during the first two years, and the chief agronomist for the remaining three. In 2268, as judged by Ambassador Ninties under the terms of the Organian Peace Treaty, the Klingons were declared the winners for making the best use of the planet's resources and the Federation colony was disbanded.
Six months later, the Klingon colony was attacked by an unknown enemy, later revealed to be the returning Narr. The colony's distress signal was answered by the Federation starships USS Enterprise and USS Farragut, and the Klingon starship IKS Klothos. Together, they defended the colony against the Narr until Captain James T. Kirk negotiated an agreement in which the Klingons would grow crops for themselves and the Narr in exchange for the planet. - The Klingon name for Signi Beta is likely a reference to QI'tu', the Klingon equivalent of Eden or Sha Ka Ree.
