Last update: 03 August 2023

This page of the guide to Baldur's Gate 3 has a mini-summary of the Baldur's Gate series, a Dungeons & Dragons and Forgotten Realms RPG – it includes part one, Siege of Dragonspear expansion, Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn and Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal expansion which concludes the saga.

Baldur's Gate

You start as the foster child of Gorion, the sage of Candlekeep. After an attempt on your life, you embark on an adventure. However, your stepfather is killed by a mysterious assassin. You are joined by your friend Imoen and several other companions. Together, you set out to solve the problems plaguing the Sword Coast, e.g. in the iron crisis and the increasing number of bandits.

It turns out that the plot is somehow connected to you. Sarevok, your half-brother, is behind the whole thing. You have the same father, Bhaal. It turns out you are the descendants of the Lord of Murder who was killed during the Time of Trouble. It turns out that Sarevok wanted to take over his father's work. You stopped him and became the hero of Baldur's Gate.

Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear

Caelar Argent leads an insurrection. After the attempt on our life, you join the Baldur's Gate forces to stop the revolutionaries. Your actions are watched by a mysterious wizard. Subsequent discoveries point to dark forces.

It is revealed that Caelar wanted to challenge the demon Belhifet, who imprisoned someone close to her. You solve the problem, for example, by finishing off the demon and saving the prisoner. As you celebrate your victory, the daughter of one of the dukes of Baldur's Gate is killed. Right in front of you. And you were the one blamed for it. You are arrested, arraigned, and then kidnapped by a mysterious force.

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows Amn

You wake up in a cell in an unknown dungeon. You're being tortured by a mage, later known as Irenicus. Someone attacks the sorcerer's headquarters, and you are rescued by Imoen. You're also bringing your companions, Minsca and Jaheira, into this. You escape the dungeon, and on the way, you find out that Jaheira's husband is dead. Also, a thief named Yoshimo joins you. You get out and see your torturer, Irenicus, fighting the bandits and wizards. Imoen joins the fight. They both get arrested. To free her, you collect 20000 pieces of gold for the Shadow Thieves, fight the vampires who try to drive out the thieves, and then swim to the Spellheld to free your friend and defeat Irenicus.

You succeed in the first part of the plan, but Irenicus and Bodhi escape. Also, Yoshimo turns out to be a traitor. You follow Irenicus into the Underdark. He stole your (and Imoen's) divine soul. You use a disguise to go through the Underdark, wreaking havoc among the Dark Elves who want to attack their cousins living on the surface.

You get out, kill Bodhi and help Imoen get her soul back. You pursue Irenicus to Suldanesselar, the city of Elves where the sorcerer wants to suck the power out of the Tree of Life. You defeat the enemy, but he uses his all the strength he has left to drag you to hell. That's where you fight the ultimate duel with the mage and defeat him once and for all. You also get your soul back, and with it, Bhaal's legacy. That's where the problems begin...

Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal

This is the time of the Bhaalspawn. The prophecy of sage Alaundo is fulfilled. Your siblings are either leading big armies into battle or being chased by the sociecites. The five most powerful descendants of the Lord of Murder have begun to hunt you down. You go to the besieged Saradush, where you meet Melissana, a woman who wants to help people like you. You are joined by Sarevok who returns from beyond the grave.

You are tested by mysterious Solar in a corner of hell designed specifically for you to see if you are ready for the final confrontation. When you defeat Balthazar, the last of the five, it is revealed that Melissana was behind the whole war – her real name is Amelissana, Bhaal's priestess. She decided to betray her master and seize his power. You stop her right next to the Throne of Bhaal. Then you either take over your father's work or give it up. The choice is up to you. This is your destiny.
