One of the restrictions found in Songs of Conquest is the allowed number of heroes - commanders with their own armies who can travel around the map. From this guide page you will learn how to check the current limit of heroes, how to raise the limit of wielders for the selected scenario, how to hire the services of new wielders and how to change the limit of heroes in the map settings.
- Current hero number limit
- Increasing the maximum limit and hiring wielders
- Limit of wielders in mission settings
Current hero number limit
- You can check the limit of heroes for the current scenario at any time during the game, without having to open additional menus. It is located in the upper left corner of the screen, under the portrait of the currently selected hero (limit of 2 wielders in the example in the picture).
Increasing the maximum limit and hiring wielders
You can increase the limit by taking over and expanding strongholds and settlements located on the map. You can also recruit new wielders in each of these locations:
- A fully developed town guarantees 3 wielders.
- A fully developed large settlement guarantees 2 wielders.
- A small settlement regardless of the level of development guarantees 1 wielder.
The above mechanics do not apply to all game modes. For example, the story campaign may have artificial limits on wielders. You won't be able to increase them even by taking over more cities, and the game may force you to play only characters related to the storyline.
- You can hire new heroes by clicking on the main building of the acquired settlement or stronghold. Select the wielder icon and a list of available commanders will be displayed.
- You have to pay to hire each new wielder, but this is a one-time fee. You don't have to pay a hero every round, for example.
- Before spending gold, it's a good idea to review the wielder's starting skills and specialization, as well as stats and the troops with which you will begin. This can help in selecting the optimal candidate (e.g. wielder with a different set of skills from the characters you already have).
Limit of wielders in mission settings
- When choosing a single scenario or creating a new random map, you can adjust the maximum number of wielders - this is one of the mission modifiers. To do this, go to the game settings window (see image above). You can stay with the default limit for a given map or choose a different number of wielders from the drop-down menu.
