Last update: 10 July 2020
This page of our Minecraft guide has detailed descriptions of the available gameplay modes. You select the game mode before you start the actual gameplay. You can't change it later. There are four modes to choose from:
Survival
The basic mode. You start from a scratch, you gain experience, build items and structures. The difficulty level can be changed in the options menu. The game adheres to the basic mechanics. This is the basic mode that uses all of the options available in Minecraft.
Hardcore
A mode for die-hard fans that look for challenges. It is nearly identical to the survival mode, with the exception that, if you die - the game ends and all of the items that you have amassed disappear from the game's memory. Also, difficulty level is permanently set to the most difficult one.
Creative
A mode for players who would rather leave the survival convention of the game and focus solely on creating structures and modifications to the world. This mode stretches the mechanics typical for the above two modes: you have access to limitless resources, destroy any blocks in one blow, you can fly, there is no health bar (invincibility) and no need to replenish hunger, or gain experience.
Adventure
Available only in the multiplayer mode over LAN. Its features are: programmable buttons and pressure plates, you cannot destroy blocks without the appropriate tool, maps from the remaining modes can be used in the Adventure mode.
