Skeleton (Restless) form
The skeleton (Restless) form is initially the most effective method of combat - although you cannot run and you do not regenerate your health passively. However, you get more HP and increased attack power.
The skeleton passively deals 5 points of damage - more than with basic tools. As long as you can't afford to craft and use swords, and if you're good at dodging, it's a pretty convenient option. In addition, you are immune to the age-related debuff and also do not drown in deep water!
Basic debuffs
The basic statuses/debuffs applied to enemies are Wound, Burn, Poison and the Soulless status. The latter is responsible for reducing the opponent's maximum health and we recommend using it before fighting any stronger opponent. Besides, the Poison and Burn debuffs are very weak - Burn lasts for a brief moment, Poison is too slow. Wound is a good debuff, but requires the opponent to move in order to take damage. This will be a particularly effective way of fighting monsters encountered during exploration. Dogs have a special ability that allows them to inflict Wound and then quickly run away.
Moreover, you can manipulate your age. The Bestiary shows that compared to adults, the younger ones are weaker and have less health, while the skeletons are usually much stronger. You can manipulate the age by using a Broom or Aging potions. You can transform the skeletons into a "living" form with the Vivify potion. Note, however, that depending on age, monsters drop different amounts of items (and sometimes a different type).
Ranged combat - Damage potion
The easiest way to fight is by keeping distance. To create a Damage potion, you only need 1x Tea Leaves and a multiplier, e.g. Fishbones or Claw Aloe. This is not a cheap method to fight every opponent you meet, but you can find Claw Aloe and Tea Leaves in the first locations. You get Fishbones from the pond in the Abandoned House, as a drop from defeated enemies, and in tipped boats. The strongest monsters - Valravn and Dobhar-chu have 120 health points.
Improved tools
By using the Claw Aloe and any tool, you can increase the damage dealt up to 20 points. This will make almost every basic enemy to die after one or two hits. However, you will be able to obtain these weapons only after healing the tree in Wasteland, because then you will gain access to Spectral Fuel - a resource for upgrading weapons.
Instead of upgrading your sword, upgrade your shovel or ax. They are lighter and will be of use right away when you want to harvest wood or dig up a treasure, without carrying tools and a sword.
More information on upgrading weapons can be found on a separate page of this guide.
Army of Ghouls
You can tame units and resurrect them later. This is a good idea when talking about strong units. However, if you do not need help during regular exploration, you can use the help of the summoned units. In this case, the Ghouls are the best option. To discover their material - Ghoul Skin - you only need three pieces of this resource, and you can obtain it from infected people in Wasteland (mainly in the north-western part of the map, where you will quickly go after unlocking Gorgon's Lair). By combining 1x Ghoul Skin and 1x Berry, you will receive the Ghoul Summon Potion.
However, Ghouls have one strong disadvantage - they eat corpses to restore health. However, if you want to complete the Bestiary pages by researching defeated enemies, the Ghouls will effectively prevent you from doing so.
Amulets
Basic amulets aren't common items, but you can obtain them:
- From ship recruits,
- From the Merchant,
- Craft it yourself.
The Claw Amulet, which increases the attack power by 10 (it gets "depleted" over time) is especially useful. However, you can Enhance it. By using the forge, Claw and Spectral Fuel, you will improve its attack stat to 20. However - the effect of this amulet only applies to unarmed combat.
The second important piece of jewelry is the Virtue Ring, which protects you from the Soulless status by default. However, you can use it to defend against other debuffs, such as Poison or Burn.
